Books are my passions. They are the very things that deliver warmth to me, and therefore, I feel enormous gratitude to them.
I always think of books with profound feeling, being deeply indebted to them, as I am, for the warmth they have brought me.
Books are my important mentors. In my childhood, poverty deprived me of an opportunity to live a happy life and receive education in school. Yet, it is books that welcomed me into their world and provided sufficient nutrition for my soul. Indeed, these books make me who I am today – I would have been living a life of ignorance if not for them.
Books are my beloved teachers. In my childhood, when I was deprived of happiness and schooling by poverty, books took me to their large bosoms and nurtured me generously. It is to them that I owe what I am today. Without them, I would probably have ended up in abject misery long ago.
Books are my good friends. They give me a golden key and guide me to broaden my horizons, remove ignorance, and open my closed heart. They never begrudge every support given to me.
Books are my good friends. They have offered me a golden key to broadening my horizons and ridding myself of stupidity and ignorance. They spare no efforts to help me.
Books are my sweethearts in the youth, my bosom friends in the middle age, and my life partners in the golden years. With them in my life, I am no longer worried about a life of loneliness or the fickleness of the world. Indeed, they have made me a billionaire in the spiritual sense, and I can't live without them every day. When I am exhausted after a busy day, or when I feel angry or frustrated, I'd like to be together with books which are a fascinating source of comfort.
张培基译文
Books are my sweethearts in my youth, my bosom friends in my middle age, and my companions in my declining years. Accompanied by books, I never feel lonely, nor fear social snobbery or fickleness of the world. They have made a rich man of me in the inner world. I cannot do without them even for a single day. When I feel tired out after finishing my work, or when I am in a bad mood, I'll try to get close to books for comfort ----the best way for me to find spiritual consolation.
参考译文
I am eager to be a bookworm2 or even a bibliophile1, but I know that I am not qualified.
张培基译文
Oh, if only I were a confirmed bibliomaniac or bookworm! But, unfortunately, I'm still not fully qualified for one yet!
bibliophile a person who loves or collects books 爱书者;藏书家
bookworm a person who likes reading very much 极爱读书的人;书迷;书呆子
参考译文
I don't know who notoriously invented prisons. The deprivation of freedom is indeed the cruelest criminal punishment in the human world, but if the prisoners are allowed to read books, then they are not fully deprived of freedom. And in this regard, I have learned it the hard way.
张培基译文
I don't know who was the despicable originator of the prison. Deprivation of freedom is the most savage punishment on earth for sure, but, as I've learned from my own personal bitter experience, if prisoners are permitted the right to read they should not be regarded as totally devoid of freedom.
参考译文
Burning and banning books represents the highest degree of ignorance and barbarism; it turns the clock of history back in a horrible way. Of course, some books are poison to our heart. They are the god of plague and angel of death, which everyone in the world should say no to.
张培基译文
Burning or banning books is the height of folly and barbarity, signifying a most horrible retrogression in history. Of course there is also some rubbish among books to be avoided like the plague or Death by all.
参考译文
A writer acquires the biggest pleasure when he gives his books to his friends as gifts or writes for his readers. And if his books strike a chord with the wider society and win widespread praise and recognition, he receives the most important reward. Reading books quietly in a tranquil environment and in a relaxed mood, I think, is the most intense joy in life. In the days that led up to the collapse of the Gang of Four, I chose to read books in Longhua Park to avoid a sea of apathy and disdain around me. Reading books in my vast and independent world is an experience that will never slip my mind. Books are the sun, air, rain and dew. I can't imagine what the world would be like without books.
张培基译文
It is the greatest pleasure for a writer to present to his friends gift copies of a book authored by himself or to have it offered to the reading public. And he will feel richly rewarded if his books arouses public interest and earns wide acclaim. It is the greatest joy of life for one to spend his leisure time reading in quiet surroundings. On the eve of the fall of the "Gang of Four", I used to go to Longhua Park every day for a reading session, seeking shelter from a sea of frosty looks and hostile stares in a world of my own. That will forever remain an unforgettable experience of my life. Books are sunlight and air, rain and dew. I can't imagine what would become of the world without books.
